A massive flash flood in Nepal struck villages near Tibet on Wednesday, 26 August. So far, eight people have been killed. Authorities have sent helicopters for rescue purposes, Reuters reported.
Roads, bridges and power projects have sustained significant damage in affected areas. Tibet also reported major casualties after a mudslide.
Rising waters prevented helicopters from landing in Nepal’s Rasuwa district. Officials warned of potential heavy casualties or significant property loss.
Residents near the Bhote Koshi river were urged to seek higher ground. A witness described hearing a loud sound before chaos erupted.
“It all came suddenly. We heard a loud sound, like a erupting. People started to scream and ran away,” the Onlinekhabar quoted the witness as saying.
Army officials confirmed that rescue helicopters remained grounded until the waters receded. The ‘s exact cause remains unclear at this stage.
“There could be heavy casualties or loss of property. But I cannot say for sure now,” district administrator Narendra Pariyar told Reuters.
