David Morens, a former senior adviser to Anthony Fauci at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge linked to efforts to conceal government records concerning COVID-19 research and grant funding.
The 78-year-old entered his guilty plea Tuesday in federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland. He is scheduled to be sentenced on November 12 and faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Who is David Morens?
Morens is a physician and scientist who worked for decades in the federal government and became a senior official at NIAID during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also served as a senior adviser to Fauci, who headed the institute for 38 years.
During the pandemic, Morens was involved in matters related to infectious disease research, including discussions surrounding coronavirus research grants.

US prosecutors accused Morens of conspiring to circumvent federal public-records laws by using his personal email account for government-related communications.
Prosecutors said Morens and others anticipated that their communications could be obtained through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. They allegedly agreed to use his private email instead of his government account to discuss sensitive matters.
