President has ordered the US Navy to remove the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) for aircraft carriers and return to steam catapults. While the Republican president has long indicated his preference for the latter, the Associated Press reported this move would likely cost billions of dollars and revert the most advanced ships to a system that needs more sailors to operate, and is tougher to maintain.

Security expert slams Trump’s switch to steam catapults
Malcolm Nance, who used to be a Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer specializing in naval cryptology, slammed Trump’s decision. Taking to X, he wrote “Some drunk old pilot who flew F-9 Cougars in the non-war period between Korea and Vietnam convinced him Steam was the only way to go.”
Nance added “EMALS means SUPERFAST launches and getting the carrier airwing off the deck and onto the enemy faster. CHINA IS NOW COPYING THEM!”.
Indeed, the newest Chinese aircraft carriers has electromagnetic catapults and France also said it plans to use the system on its new carrier, as per AP.
Trump’s stance on steam catapults and new orders explained
Trump has also said that Ford-class carrier’s electromagnetic weapons elevators should be replaced. He has batted for steam technology as far back as 2017. “You’re going to goddamned steam,” Trump had told TIME magazine in an interview.

As per the memo, the fourth Ford-class carrier, the USS Doris Miller, will be the first ship to include these changes. This leaves USS Gerald R. Ford, USS John F. Kennedy and USS Enterprise, untouched.
The electromagnetic system offers some advantages like the ability to launch an aircraft at a faster speed. These systems are easy to maintain and also need fewer sailors, which means less space on board the ship is used. On board the USS Ford, the use of EMALS cut the number of sailors operating catapults from a dozen to just two.
General Atomics, which makes EMALS, told AP that Trump’s decision to change course now, when work on Doris Miller’s catapults and arresting gear is halfway done, would ‘introduce significant cost, schedule, and integration risks’.
