US President Donald Trump on Monday intensified his criticism of Canada amid a tariff row between the two countries, saying he would “not treat Canada like a State anymore.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Canada had been “ripping off” the US, while slamming their “ridiculously high tariffs” on America’s farmers and farm products. Trump said that the US “doesn’t need Canada”, while claiming that the country was “among the worst nations in the world to deal with” in trade and “in other ways.”
“Their ridiculously high tariffs on our Farmers and farm products has made life impossible for these great American Patriots, and has long created a 60 Billion Dollar Deficit between our two Countries,” Trump said in his post, adding that these were “not sustainable, not anymore.”
This came after the on Canadian products worth $20 billion last week, after the collapse of trade talks between the countries. Canada was quick to react to the move, with Prime Minister Mark Carney vowing to match the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration “dollar for dollar”.
Tariffs on on all cars and trucks to increase to 50%: Trump
The US President said that US tariffs on all cars and trucks, as well as large and small automobile parts, would be raised to 50 per cent from January, 2027. He added that there would be zero tariffs, however, if the companies “build in the US.”
“On January First, 2027, Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50%. Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada will be treated like a State no longer!” Trump said in his post.
The US President said that Canada “feel(s) entitled”, adding that Ottawa does 95 per cent of their business with America. Trump had, on Sunday, accused Canada of asking too much while renewing his 51st state jibe.
“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!! They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!” he wrote on Truth Social.
‘US terms called into question reliability of deal’: Carney
On Saturday, after the trade talks collapse, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the US of setting terms and conditions at the last minute. “In recent days, the United States proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair and undermined the net benefits for Canada, and called into question the reliability of any deal,” Carney said in Ottawa, according to AFP. He further said that Canada “could not accept” what was offered and “could not give what they asked.”
Canada then announced retaliatory tariffs, with PM Carney saying, “You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked.”
Canadian tariffs, which will come into effect from September 8, will notably target the US steel and dairy industries. Carney said more details would be released this week.
