‘Violence has no place in democracy’: PM Modi after Trump’s shooting incident

Narendra Modi on Sunday reacted to the event in Washington attended by US President , saying he was relieved that the President, the first lady Melania Trump and the Vice President JD Vance were “safe and unharmed.”

Extending his best wishes for their continued safety and well-being, Modi stressed that “violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned.”

Modi’s remarks came hours after Trump and other senior officials were evacuated from the White House correspondent’s dinner venue following a shooting incident.

What we know about the White House event shooting

The accused has been identified as , 31, from Torrance, California, according to two law enforcement officials cited by the Associated Press.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, though a law enforcement official said a shooter had opened fire during the incident, prompting a swift security response.

The FBI confirmed that the suspect is in custody, with its Washington field office leading the investigation into the shooting.

US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the suspect is being preliminarily charged with two offences related to the use of a firearm and assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon. She added that additional charges are likely as authorities gather more information in what she described as a “very fluid situation.”

Pirro also said the suspect is expected to be arraigned in federal district court on Monday as the legal process moves forward.

Police said the suspect was armed with multiple weapons at the time of the incident, underscoring the seriousness of the security breach.
