Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead in her home Wednesday, April 1, Fox News reported. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, is now in police custody, authorities said.

Nancy was shot dead just three months after her brother died by suicide, People reported.

Police found the South Florida city leader at around 10 am on Wednesday after they began an investigation into her “well-being,” according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Police Chief Brad Mock said that the case was being investigated as a “domestic violence incident.” No more details have been provided about the circumstances of Nancy’s death.

Who was Nancy Metayer Bowen?

Nancy, who was first elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2020, was re-elected in 2024. Last November, she was appointed by the commission to serve a second, one-year term as vice mayor, according to her bio on the city’s website.

Before her election to the commission, Nancy worked as an environmental scientist who formerly served on the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

Nancy, 38, was the first Black woman elected to the Coral Springs Commission in 2020, according to Florida Politics.

Later, former President and former Vice President tapped Nancy to serve as Florida’s Caribbean Vote Director during the 2024 presidential election.

Coral Springs, Florida Government’s Facebook page paid tribute to Nancy in a post after his death. “We are heartbroken to share that Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer has died. She was more than a public servant, she was a light in our community,” the post reads.

“Her leadership was grounded in compassion, strength, and an unwavering commitment to others. Her impact on Coral Springs is immeasurable, and her loss leaves a void in our hearts. We ask our community to keep her family, loved ones, and all who are grieving in your thoughts and prayers. In this difficult time, we stand together as one city. We will carry her light, even in this darkness,” it adds.

Nancy Metayer Bowen’s brother’s death

Nancy’s brother, Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, was a survivor of the at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. Nancy previously that her brother died by suicide on December 15, 2025, “after a seven-year battle with schizophrenia.”

“The loss of our family’s youngest child is a sorrow beyond words — one that will echo through our lives, forever,” his family wrote on a page after his death.
