The US Embassy in Amman has urged American citizens across the Middle East to consider leaving the region if possible, warning that escalating tensions with Iran could trigger further attacks, flight disruptions and security risks.
In a security alert issued on Saturday (August 1), the embassy said the regional security environment remains “complex” and cautioned that the situation could deteriorate without warning.
US urges Americans to prepare for possible evacuation
The embassy advised Americans currently in the Middle East to remain vigilant and be prepared for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions.
It said some airlines have delayed resuming normal flight schedules while others have cancelled routes altogether.
“Americans in the region should consider departing, or be prepared to depart should there be escalation,” the advisory said.
The embassy also urged Americans outside the Middle East to “seriously reconsider” travel to or through the region.
Iran described as unpredictable
The alert warned that the Iranian government has become increasingly unpredictable, citing recent attacks carried out without warning and the expansion of operations into countries that had not previously been targeted, including Egypt.
The embassy cautioned that Americans should not assume they are safe simply because US interests have not previously been attacked in a particular country.
“Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other US interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world,” the advisory said.
Potential targets could include US diplomatic facilities, businesses and other institutions linked to the United States.
Americans told to avoid military sites
The US Embassy specifically advised American citizens in Jordan to avoid traveling to military bases.
It also warned that Iran has targeted civilian infrastructure across the Middle East, including airports, hotels and other public locations.
The embassy urged Americans to follow instructions from Jordanian authorities, including emergency sirens and other public safety alerts.
Travel disruptions expected
The embassy warned travelers to expect continued disruptions to air travel across the region.
Passengers were advised to check directly with airlines before traveling and monitor airport operations for the latest updates.

Reconsider travel to or through the region.
Avoid demonstrations and large public gatherings.
Stay away from areas with heavy police or military deployments.

Enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates and facilitate contact during emergencies.
The advisory comes amid heightened regional tensions involving Iran and ongoing conflicts across the Middle East, with US officials warning that the security situation remains fluid and could change rapidly.
